Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing March 10 that China would further intensify its efforts of law enforcement this year so as to straighten out and standardize the country's economic order.
"We must deal a quick and heavy blow on various economic crimes according to law with no lenience, and take a resolute stand in punishing the criminals severely," Zhu, also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, told deputies to the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature in session here since last Friday, from Guangdong and Sichuan provinces during panel discussions on the afternoon of March 10.
A severe crackdown on economic crimes is an important component of the strategy of governing the country according to law, as well as a major guarantee for the smooth development of the reform, opening-up and modernization drive and for maintaining social stability, said the premier.
Last year, he said, governments at all levels did a lot of work in straightening out and standardizing the financial order, cracking down on smuggling and foreign exchange infractions and levying taxes according to law, and achieved marked successes.
"However, economic order remains in serious chaos in quite a few places at present," Zhu said, adding that effective measures must be taken to safeguard the authority and sanctity of national laws and the order of the socialist market economy.
He also called on people in both provinces to make unswerving efforts to further promote reform and opening-up and achieve greater successes.
Some Guangdong and Sichuan deputies also voiced their opinions on issues ranging from the crackdown on smuggling to the reform of state-owned enterprises during the panel discussions.
