One Year after WTO Accession

China sees WTO as positive for economy

One year working within the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework has brought positive results to the Chinese economy, and the performance of China's national economy has been better than that of the same period of last year. So says Zhang Zhigang, vice minister in charge of the State Economic and Trade Commission in a statement issued on Tuesday in Beijing.

Zhang Zhigang says the Chinese government has largely transformed its functions and improved its administrative capability since China joined the World Trade Organization a year ago.

He says that his commission has cleared 113 departmental regulations issued before 2001 as well as establishing new ones. Over the past year, China has accelerated the industrial restructuring, regrouped the civil aviation and telecommunication industries into corporations and is in the process of regrouping the power, rail, non-ferrous metals and gold industries.

China takes more safeguarding measures in anti-dumping and anti-subsidy campaigns, registering a total of 10 anti-dumping cases worth about seven billion US dollars. The relevant businesses have also learned to calmly face trade disputes within the framework of the WTO and protect their legal rights.
