An American,John Knight,lives in Hong Kong. Since he graduated from university, John Knight has been engaged in education, publishing and charities in China’s mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong. He was granted permanent resident in HK in 1997. Accidentally, John was told that a person of the elder generation in his family worked in China about 90 years ago. That person was Luther Knight,John’s great-great-grandfather.
Luther Knight was born in Iowa in the US in 1879. He graduated from John Hopkin’s University with a master’s degree in science in 1906. Knight came to Chengdu in China in 1910. There, he was professor of chemistry and mathemetics at Sichuan University, formally known as the Sichuan Higher Academy of the Qing Dynasty. He died in Chengdu in April, 1913 at the age of 34.
Knight was in China for a total of 2 years and 8 months. It is the period that Qing Dynasty collapsed. Knight witnessed this part of the history. He left over 300 photos about this, and wrote a dozen of letters to his sister Euvenda. After Luther’s death, Euvenda had an American teaching at the same university ship his belongings back to the US.
