APEC Representatives from Chinese Taipei Still Uncertain

    The Chinese government is still working out details of who will represent Chinese Taipei at the APEC meetings in Shanghai.

    At a news conference on Sunday, China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said an APEC memorandum of understanding on Chinese Taipei from 10 years ago is clear.

    Zhang Qiyue said, "As long as the candidates from Chinese Taipei is in accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding, I don't think we will have any objections to it."

    Ten years ago, APEC members agreed to admit China, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong. The Memorandum of Understanding reached at the third ministerial meeting in Seoul South Korea reflected China's own sentivitiy on the subject of Taiwan. Wang Guangya, vice minister of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the document was very specific about Chinese Taipei.

    Wang Guangya said, "The highest level of representatives from Chinese Taipei has to be a minister in charge of economic affairs, so it is an economic minister.

    He also said Beijing has invited Chinese Taipei to attend both the senior officials and the ministrial meetings in Shanghai. He added that representatives from the island are welcome, because Chinese Taipei is an APEC member economy.
