Shanghai Ready for APEC Economic Leaders Meeting
MON, OCT 15, 2001

Shanghai is showing her best face to the world as the 2001 APEC economic leaders meeting opens. Great efforts have been made by various sectors to ensure the success of the historical event.

The Pudong New Area, where most of the APEC meetings will be held, has become a world of flowers. More than 2 million flower pots are being displayed and 12 new parks have been opened. Shanghai's old commercial center to the west of the Huangpu River is just as attractive. The Huangpu river at night becomes a spectacular resort, as buildings of various styles are decorated by dazzling lights, blending history with a modern look.

More than 40 hotels in Shanghai have been prepared for the event. The 75-year old Heping Hotel features a 10th floor roof garden, offering guests one of the best views of the city. The Regal International East Asia Hotel has renovated its suites and guestrooms to meet international standards. In the Pudong New Area, the soaring Grand Hyatt Hotel has become the new symbol of Shanghai.

To ensure the success of the APEC economic leaders meeting, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government has exercised traffic control programs in most of the city proper since Sunday. More than 10,000 police are now at work. To ease the traffic crunch, the number of vehicles entering Shanghai will be restricted. The public transportation sector has also increased the number of public buses in use.
