Shanghai Steps Up Traffic Control for APEC

This east China metropolis will divert traffic flows for certain areas, including the Pudong New District, venue of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2001 meetings this week, said a local source.
Most citizens have shown high sense of understanding about and support for the decision of the municipal government, describing the inconvenience that might bring to them by the traffic control as a "trifle" so long as "our distinguished guests from the APEC member economies can feel convenient."
"As the hosts of the grand event, it's only natural to offer what we can for the convenience of our guests from the APEC members," many citizens interviewed by Xinhua said.
"I deem myself a volunteer in publicizing the APEC meetings," said Shao Min, a driver from Pudong, "I often tell my guests and friends it is what we should have done to ensure the smooth going of the APEC meetings despite of some inconvenience to ourselves," he said.
Some citizens have already planned to travel outside of Shanghai during the week when most of the country's scenic spots are becoming less crowded. "This is another way to lessen Shanghai 's traffic burden," some citizens agreed.
