FRI, OCT 12, 2001

Nearly 800 Buicks from Shanghai General Motors will serve as the official APEC vehicles in China.

These include Buick sedans for ministers and business cars for APEC representatives, according to officials with the General Motors (GM) China Corporation.

As the biggest car manufacturer in the world and a major corporate sponsor of the APEC, GM believes that the meeting will promote exchanges within the region and enhance economic cooperation between nations.

"APEC is an important driving force behind the promotion of trade and the opening of markets in the Pacific Rim. It will help create unprecedented economic opportunities across China and the region," said Rudolph A. Schlais, Jr., president and CEO of General Motors Asia Pacific.

Schlais said that China will become one of the growth points in the global car market. GM hopes to develop a strategic partnership with the Chinese car industry and provide qualified products, services and technology to China in order to help increase its competitive edge.

On the morning of October 19, GM Chairman John F. Smith Jr. will address the CEO Summit on the importance of corporate responsibility and sustainable development.
