Man From "Roof of the World" in Antarctica |
Bianba Cering is the first Tibetan who has stepped on the Antarctica.
"The snow scene there is much more magnificent and beautiful than it is in Tibet," he told a crowded briefing conference in Lhasa Thursday.
However, the mission of this 28-years-old man from "the roof of the world" to the South Pole was not tourism but scientific study.
Talking about the 450 memorable days he spent as a meteorologist on the Antarctica, he said, "I am lucky to be a member of the 16th Polar Scientific Research Team. It is not only a moment of great pride for myself but also for the whole Tibetans. "
Bianba Cering went to the South Pole along with 120 scientists and journalists on board the Xuelong (Snow Dragon) Chinese ship in November 1999. He was not only the first Tibetan but also the first man from any ethnic group in China to go to Antarctica.
"As a young scientist, I am particularly grateful to leaders at all levels for offering me a chance to accomplish my long- cherished wish," he added
He reviewed the month-long painful and boring life on board the vessel heading to the South Pole and their research there.
Bianba Cering graduated from the Nanjing Meteorological Institute in 1996 and has worked in the Tibet Meteorological Bureau for three years.
While his stay in Antarctica, he conducted ground surveys four times a day and sent the meteorological data he had obtained to the world meteorological data bank
"I will classify the data I got in Antarctica and compare it with my observation in Tibet," he said.
Although Bianba Cering now has returned to Lhasa, he left a Tibetan touch in the South Pole permanently -- a silk scroll painting of the Potala Palace of Tibet, which is now collected by the Sun Yat-sen Museum of the Zhongshan Scientific Research Station.
