Waibaidu bridge reopens to pedestrians
Video

Review

The Waibaidu bridge was taken from its piers last March, after standing at the intersection of Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River for more than 100 years. It underwent renovation to extend its lifespan by another 50 years, before returning to its original location.

Waibaidu bridge -- Century-old bridge

At 9:50 a.m., a barge carrying the northern part of the steel bridge left a shipyard at Pudong´s Minsheng Road. Thirty minutes later a crowd watched it arrive on site, as a band played Going Home.

At noon, the section was moved into place and was finally secured at 5.20 pm.

Shanghai´s landmark -- "Grandma´s Bridge"

The bridge designed by Briton Howarth Erskine was a popular setting for Chinese movies depicting the dashing industrial boom in old Shanghai.
