US calls for Israeli, Palestinian cooperation on elections

The United States on Friday called on the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and the Israeligovernment to cooperate closely on the Palestinian elections on Sunday.

"It will be important for the Palestinian (National) Authority and the government of Israel to cooperate closely regarding both security and freedom of movement for both voters and candidates," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said at a news briefing.

"We have been and continue to work closely with both parties insupport of this kind of cooperation, in support of successful administration of the elections," Ereli said.

As to the PNA and the Israeli government, "they have been working well together so far. It is important that they continue to work well together to have a successful election," Ereli added.

The United States has asked Israel to facilitate the Palestinian elections and is providing both financial and technical assistance to Sunday's elections.

Meanwhile, the United States will send an official delegation to observe the Palestinian elections and the delegation will be led by Senator John Sununu of New Hampshire and Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, both from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
