San Francisco, 2001
I wasn鈥檛 feeling half as 鈥榖right eyed鈥as this photograph may suggest. Neither, I assume, was Hong Kong鈥檚 Chief Executive, Tung Chee-Hwa. We had flown into the West Coast just hours ahead of a crucial International Olympic Committee vote to decide the host city for 2008. Beijing, Paris and Toronto were the pre-race favourites. We started broadcasting this interview at five am, thanks to the time difference between Moscow (where the action was taking place) and San Francisco (where we had converted a hotel suite into a makeshift studio). But Tung鈥檚 smile was completely unscripted 鈥Beijing won.
