China is now experiencing its annual peak in summer travel. Figures from railways, civil aviation and port authorities show passenger volumes are similar to previous years, despite the recent SARS outbreak. The return to normal is a welcome sign. University students are returning home for the summer break. Tourists are on the move, especially in Henan, Hebei, Hunan and Guangdong, where holiday travel is reaching a peak. For the most part, it's business as usual. The only change, passengers have to declare their health condition and take a temperature test before starting their journey.
Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province in central China. It's a railway transit hub, especially for Beijing and Shanghai-bound passengers. About 40,000 people are passing through here every day, and rail authorities are adding extra cars to meet the surge in passenger volume.
Following the lifting of a travel ban on sight-seeing in China, the number of tourists on the move has soared. They're headed to resorts like Qinghuangdao and Yantai in the east, or famous sites like Jiu Zaigou in the southwest. Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei Province. It's an important railway transit point. And, today, it's bustling.
The tourism revival is boosting transport sectors, particularly the airlines which were hit hard by SARS. Statistics show a considerable increase in air traffic in parts of China. In Chongqing, for example, passenger numbers are up 10 percent for the first 11 days of this month, compared with the same period last year.
