Residents of the nation's capital once again have full access to the fresh air and open fields in suburban Beijing. Free from the threat of SARS, an excursions to the outskirts of the city are getting more and more popular. And international tourists have also been once again booking reservations and group tours to China again, eager to see the country's numerous tourist attractions.
The first overseas tourist group after the WHO lifted its travel advisory against Beijing, is due to arrive in Beijing this afternoon. The South Korean group is mainly composed of travel agents and representatives from airlines and the media. They are to usher in more South Korean tourists after investigating Beijing's ability to handle the influx of tourists.
The welcome in a village in suburban Beijing is hearty. No longer regarding city dwellers a potential threat to their health, people here are glad to share their rustic joys with guests from the city. Traditional folk dances and fireworks are on display. And a delicious courtyard dinner is one of the most relaxing ways to put aside the hustle and bustle of city life, and enjoy the joys of the simple life.
"It's my first time in this part of Beijing. And everything is just so nice," said a Japanese student in Beijing.
Quiet places are always available in the countryside. Cycling around, or mountaineering with one or two friends are perhaps the most favorite ways for young urbanites to relax. Ample accommodations are easy to find in villages nestling beside the hills. Hosts says they're ready to meet the new post-SARS demand, offering clean sheets, warm showers and a hearty dinner to spread cheer among their guests.
A villager said, "We want to do our best in cooking and cleaning. We have every necessary disinfection apparatus here. Just feel at home if you come."
These scenes are common at many major scenic spots around the country. Not far from Beijing, attractions in neighboring Hebei Province received more than 100,000 visitors over the weekend. And the rainy season in Shanghai hasn't prevented people from enjoying the local forest parks. Adventurers in Shanxi have been taking to rafts, challenging the rapids, as well as admiring the breath-taking scenes on both sides of the river banks.
