| Bush: Washington to hold to "One China" principle |

 The United States has not, and will not change its policy towards Taiwan. US President George W. Bush made the vow during talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday. The two leaders were meeting on the sidelines of an informal dialogue between developing and developed countries, and the G－8 meeting in Evian, France.
Hu Jintao pointed out that the Taiwan problem is the most important and sensitive core issue in Sino－US relations. The Chinese government holds to the policies of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems." The Taiwan authorities have refused to recognize the "One China" principle, and those advocating the island's independence are continuing their separatist activities. These, according to Hu Jintao, are the fundamental reasons behind a tense situation across the Taiwan Straits.
Hu Jintao expressed his firm hope that the US side would abide by its promises, and not send any wrong signals to forces advocating Taiwan's independence. Bush vowed Washington will stick to the "One China" principle, as well as abide by the three Sino－US joint communiques, and oppose Taiwan's independence.
The two leaders also promised to continue their efforts in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, supporting a nuclear－free peninsula and solving its nuclear issue through dialogue.
Bush once again expressed condolences to the families and friends of SARS victims in China, and praised the proactive measures China has taken and the positive results it has achieved. Bush said Washington would continue its support and assistance for China's fight against the epidemic.
In their first summit since Hu Jintao took office, the two leaders also agreed to further promote their countries' constructive ties of cooperation. They also pledged to strengthen cooperation in their common fight against terrorism and disease, as well as in the promotion of trade and environmental protection.
Hu Jintao has also held talks with his Swiss counterpart, Pascal Couchepin, in Lausanne.
