Canadian health officials on Wednesday announced two more deaths from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), bringing the SARS death toll in Canada to 29.

The new SARS victims were two elderly women in the city of Toronto, Dr. Colin D Cunha, chief medical officer of health of Canada's Ontario Province told a news conference.

He said the province at present had 12 active probable cases in hospital, and 23 suspected cases.

Toronto had the biggest SARS outbreak outside Asia in March and April, and new SARS cases were found last week after a break of more than 20 days.

On Wednesday, an additional 1,700 people went into quarantine, all of them students and staff members of a Catholic school named Father Michael McGivney in northern Toronto. One student of the school, which has been closed, displayed SARS symptoms on campus last week.

At the daily SARS briefing for media, Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Toronto's associate medical officer of health, addressed concerns of Toronto schools.

"I can assured you, in our instances, there's no evidence of transmission of SARS in the general school community," he said.
