China's State Administration of Taxation is calling on its local branches to make every effort to ensure the timely collection of taxes, in the hope that this may help offset the negative effect of SARS on the country's revenue.
Some experts predict the SARS outbreak will lead to a loss of around 3 billion US dollars in China's tax revenue this year. Up to now, China has spent 1.8 billion US dollars in the health sector in its effort to combat SARS.
Last week, the government decided to reduce or waive fees and taxes from May to September on some of the industries hardest hit by the SARS epidemic.
Cong Ming, a research fellow with the State Council, says China has set an 11 percent revenue growth target for 2003, but in view of the current situation, more effort should be made in the collection of taxes in order to reach that target.
