As China continues its fight against SARS, companies have been responding to the call to assist medical workers with ever-larger donations. About 25 companies from home and aboard held a ceremony at Beijing's Storage Center for Disaster Donations on Wednesday to hand over their donations.
Offering sums of money and essential supplies, the majority of the donors wanted their money and medical equipment to be used to fight against SARS.
"We hope to show our care and concern for the medical workers at the frontline. We are so grateful to them and hope our money can be helpful for their work in the battle against SARS," said representative of State Electric Power Group.
One company donating devices for checking body temperatures hoped its offering would facilitate college entrance examinations scheduled for June 7 and 8. Other unusual donated goods included everything such as traditional Chinese paintings.
"It is a great help to our medical workers at the frontline. And they are aware that they are not fighting alone but have the support of people from all over China and across the world. So they will be confident of winning the battle against SARS," said Wu Wenyan, Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau.
Officials from the donation center said most goods and cheques would be distributed to hospitals in Beijing. By May 19, donations to aid the fight against SARS have totaled 1.45 billion yuan, or about 174 million US dollars.
