China's top legislator Wu Bangguo has toured the eastern province of Jiangxi to inspect its SARS-prevention efforts and economic development. The NPC chairman is calling for concerted efforts to continue advances on both fronts.
The top legislator's inspection tour over the past five days covered industrial enterprises, urban and rural areas, and construction sites.
He spoke positively of the achievements the province has made in economic development, urban and rural construction and improving the lives of farmers in the old revolutionary bases.
Wu Bangguo warned all to remain vigilant against SARS despite the great progress made in prevention nationwide.
The NPC chairman emphasized that developing the economy remains a focus of national efforts. He urged Jiangxi province to be even more open to new ideas and the outside world, while learning to do business in the market economy.
One of the main concerns of the top legislator is the economic development and livelihood of people in the old revolutionary bases.
He directed the local officials to double their efforts to improve the life of these people whose forefathers gave their lives to China's revolutionary cause.
And over in Hubei and Zhejiang provinces, the call for both efforts on SARS prevention and economic development was echoed by Li Changchun.
The member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee said SARS must be kept out of the countryside. He stressed the improvement of basic medical facilities in the rural areas.
Li Changchun asked the two provinces to do their best to minimize the negative impact of SARS and achieve social and economic objectives scheduled for this year.
