Chinese Vice-Premier and Health Minister Wu Yi has met with WHO Chief Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland in Geneva, briefing her on China's anti-SARS efforts.

During Sunday's meeting, the Chinese vice premier and health minister highly appraised what the WHO has done in global health cooperation. She said the Chinese government attaches great importance to the health and safety of its people. She added that its fight against SARS is now on top of the agenda of governments at all levels in China.

She pointed out that with more than two months of hard work, the SARS epidemic in China is under control to a certain extent. She also said China won't lower its guard at all, aiming to prevent the chance of any relapse of the epidemic.

The WHO director-general said the WHO highly appraises the effective measures taken and the great efforts made by the Chinese government in the prevention of the SARS epidemic. He added the spread of SARS reminds the international community of the importance of building a public health system network.

Wu also pointed out that the Chinese central government has always been concerned with the health and welfare of the people in Taiwan province. Since the SARS epidemic began in Taiwan, the mainland has invited health workers and experts from Taiwan to visit the mainland on numerous occasions and shared information with them.

The mainland has also provided the newly-developed "reagent" to Taiwan. Wu added that the Taiwan compatriots have access to all kinds of health information and that cooperation across the Taiwan Straits is very close. However, the Taiwan authorities tried to join WHO as an observer, in an attempt to create "two Chinas" or “One China One Taiwan.”

Brundtland said the Taiwan issue had been solved in the World Health Assembly during the past few years. She said she doesn't want this issue to disturb the handling of the SARS epidemic and other issues in the world health arena.

In another development, while meeting with health officials from Hong Kong and Macao on the same day, Wu Yi said China's central government will fully support the two administrative regions in their battles against SARS.
