Chinese vice premier meets World Health Assembly chairman |

Chinese Vice-Premier and Health Minister Wu Yi has met Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, the chairman of the 56th World Health Assembly at the WHO headquarters in Geneva on Saturday.
Wu Yi briefed Hossain on the SARS epidemic in China. She said that the Chinese government considered people's health and safety the top priority. A series of measures have been taken. Emergency plans and the social relief system have been improved, and the government has increased the funds available to fight the outbreak. Wu Yi said China has confidence in winning the battle, and is willing to fully cooperate with WHO and other countries.
Hossain said SARS is a disease unknown to both China and the world, and the wide spread of SARS in China is not due to ineffective measures. As the minister of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh, Hossain said his country and the WHO will strengthen the cooperation with China to fight against the disease. He will also draw on the Chinese experience in treating SARS in order to prevent SARS from spreading to Bangladesh.
Wu Yi arrived in Geneva on Friday to attend the 56th World Health Assembly. The assembly will take place from May 19 to 28. SARS will be high on the agenda. All the participants will be questioned about their health status, and representatives from SARS-affected areas will be required to take their temperature.
