China presented its newly developed devices for SARS prevention on Tuesday morning, including protective clothing, masks, newly designed ambulances and more. The products are the result of intense development by researchers from the task force under the National Headquarters for SARS Prevention and Control.

This protective head mask is the latest brainchild of researchers from the Chinese Military Academy of Medical Sciences. Its ventilation system filters air so that it prevents infection for medical workers who come into close contact with patients.

This clothing uses special TPU material and is able to filter all microbes in the air larger than 27 nanometers, including the SARS virus in liquid form. The clothing weighs less than one and a half kilos, good news now that the weather gets warmer for the medical workers who had to withstand the suffocating heat of the previous suits.

There is also a new protective respirator, an isolation cabin for removing infected patients and a negative pressure ambulance for transporting patients.

These five items on debut Tuesday morning represent the latest work of the scientists with the task team under the National Headquarters for SARS Prevention and Control.

Huang Peitang, vice president of Chinese Military Academy of Medical Sciences said: "These products are the results of intense research and laboratory experiments in recent months, combined with our accumulated years of experience in the area. Experts believe they represent the highest level in the field and we will provide for free these technologies for areas hard hit by the virus, as soon as the products pass testing and evaluation."

These products will soon enter their clinical experiment phase in three Beijing hospitals, including the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital, the You'an Hospital and the Number 302 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army. Although they haven't been put into mass production yet, they already mark the first phase of achievement in elevating SARS prevention capability, a major target area identified by the task team. The team is also working intensely on finding effective means to stem the spread of SARS and developing effective treatment protocols.

So far, the task team has set up 85 SARS-related research projects with funding amounting to more than 100 million yuan, or some 12 million US dollars.
