Erenhot port in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region handled record volumes of freight in foreign trade in the first four months of 2003, despite the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The volume of freight handled at Erenhot in the first four months of 2003 surpassed 1.38 million tons, an increase of 20.08 tons compared with the same period of 2002. The aggregate freight value increased by 657 million yuan (79.4 million US dollars), or up 46 percent rise year-on-year, reaching 2.086 billion yuan (25.2 million US dollars).

According to the Erenhot Customs Bureau, the freight passing through the port was mainly of imports, including crude oil, timber and powdered copper ore. Oil ranked first among the imports in both freight volume and value.

The region is one of the areas most affected by SARS in China.
