WHO revised its initial estimates of the ratio of SARS fatalities on May 8. The revisions are based on data from Canada, China, the Hong Kong S.A.R., Singapore and Vietnam.

Depending on the age group affected, the new estimate puts fatalities at between 14% and 15%, revised from 0% to 50%.

The likelihood of dying from SARS depends on the profile of the cases, including the age group most affected as well as the presence of any underlying diseases.

The fatality ratio is estimated at less than 1% in cases aged 24 years or younger, 6% in cases aged between 25 and 44, 15% in cases aged between 45 and 64, and greater than 50% in cases aged 65 years or older.
