The Beijing Municipal People's Government held its fifth news conference on SARS prevention this morning, saying the SARS situation in the capital area is improving, but a lot still needs to be done for the final victory.

Cai Fuchao, director of the Publicity Department of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, said more designated SARS hospitals are available now. With the construction of Xiaotangshan Hospital in northern Beijing and the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital and Xuanwu Hospital having been put into use, all SARS patients in non-designated hospitals in nearby counties will be transferred to more specialized designated hospitals.

As for the infections among medical workers, Cai noted the situation is already under control. He pointed out about 16 medical workers were infected every day in late April. The number has dropped to 6 in the first week of May. Cai also revealed many people under medical observation in universities have been approved for release from quarantine and now they have resumed their normal life.

Cai also said the health of rural migrant workers on major construction sites of the capital city is under close watch and will be guaranteed.

Fan Boyuan, vice mayor of Beijing who was also present at the conference, said there would be no change on the date of the college entrance exam in Beijing, which will be held on June 7th and 8th as scheduled. But students may later apply for the universities they want to attend. Fan said the official date set for the submission of applications would be postponed to June 28th and 29th.

Liang Wannian, deputy director of Beijing's Health Bureau, said currently the mortality rate of SARS is fluctuating around 5 percent in Beijing. He also expressed the city government's appreciation for international aid and cooperation to strengthen its efforts in the fight against SARS.
