A Philippine health official said Friday that breast milk apparently is best not just for babies, but could also be used to strengthen the body's immune system against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus.
Colostrum, a yellowish substance found in breast milk, is the "richest in antibodies", the Philippine Daily Inquirer on-line news quoted Philippine National Epidemiology Center head doctor Consortia Quizon-Lim as saying.
"It (breast milk) contains all of the mother's defenses (against disease) that she could pass on to her child," Lim said.
The report said commercially available colostrums capsules cost around 16.70 pesos (0.32 US dollar) per tablet.
On Wednesday, Philippine health officials said virgin coconut oil and the blood of a person who had recovered from SARS could be used to fight the killer pneumonia.
The Philippines has recorded 10 confirmed cases of SARS so far, including two deaths. Another six probable cases are still confined in local hospitals.
