Chinese scientists are developing a geographical information system to better track the spread of SARS and provide early warnings. The system is currently being tested and should be fully operational by May 20th.

The SARS-control and early warning system is an integrated platform which comprises the functions of instant data collection, surveillance, analysis and information distribution. It uses a geographical information system, or GIS, to classify, pool, and analyze information and data regarding SARS patients, suspected SARS carriers and their close associates.

The system records all kinds of information concerning SARS patients and potential SARS-virus carriers. It can electronically map the exact positions of SARS-affected areas across the country and provide early warnings on the spread of the virus.

According to a leading scientist, the system can provide efficient information on SARS prevention work in China to the general public as well as decision makers, to help them adopt measures to better check the spread of the epidemic.
