The Indian Defense Ministry has donated medicines and protective medical apparatus worth 400,000 Indian rupees, or over 8,500 US dollars, to China to support its ongoing fight against the SARS epidemic.

At a ceremony held on Friday to hand the donations over to the Chinese Embassy in India, Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes said he was impressed during his recent visit to China by the strong determination of the Chinese government and people to contain SARS. He said the donations indicate that the Indian people are on the side of the Chinese people when they face difficult times.

Fernandes said the Indian Health Ministry is also preparing to donate medical supplies to support China's efforts to contain SARS.

China's ambassador to India, Hua Junduo, expressed his thanks to the Indian government. He said the peoples of China and India have a fine tradition of supporting each other. In 2001, the Chinese government provided material aid to earthquake-stricken areas in India, and now, the Indian government has donated medicines to China. This reflects a profound friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
