SARS outbreak in Taipei's Hoping hospital under control
   CCTV.COM   2003-05-04 13:05:19
It's been more than 10 days since Taipei's municipal Hoping hospital was sealed off due to a mass SARS outbreak. Hospital medical experts say the peak of the outbreak in the area has passed and the disinfection work is under way.

Experts say SARS cases are still being reported in two of the hospital's buildings, but the patients were infected before the hospital was sealed off. A spokesman says the preventative measures are taking effect, making it impossible for mass infection to happen again.

Medical workers will now concentrate on cleaning up the hospital, and turning it into a specialized treatment center for SARS patients in the city.

Facing a severe outbreak in Taipei, the city is now focused on overall sterilization.

Ma Ying-Jeou, Taipei's Mayor, says "The campaign in Hoping hospital is ended. Now we will launch another campaign to protect the community. Negative or positive, experiences obtained from Hoping hospital will be good for our future ."

Experts have released video footage of a couple believed to be highly infectious. They say the couple are responding well to treatment.

The Taiwan authority has fined a number of hospitals and doctors for concealing or delaying the information on the outbreak of SARS in the island. Medical rooms with a capacity of 1,600 beds have been prepared for future needs in the campaign against the epidemic.
