A New Zealand woman who recently returned from China is being held in isolation at Hawke's Bay Hospital with a suspected case of the deadly SARS virus, New Zealand Press Association reported Thursday.
The woman, whose name was not disclosed, was one of a group of 35 who returned on Saturday from a three-week tour to China, was admitted to hospital on Tuesday suffering a high fever and dry cough.
The Hawke's Bay District Health Board on Thursday confirmed a person was being kept under observation in an isolation room with suspected severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
Hastings travel agent Garry Mulvanah of Twin City Harvey World Travel said the woman was a member of a tour party that he and his wife Marie led to China.
The group had visited Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Hastings' sister city Guilin and had cruised for three days on the Yangtze River, he said.
Meanwhile, another New Zealander confirmed as having the SARS virus is in a stable condition in a hospital in northwest China.
New Zealand Embassy staff in Beijing said that they had contacted the 39-year-old, who has lived in Britain for many years.
Travel agents said the number of New Zealanders traveling to Hong Kong and China's mainland had dropped markedly in recent weeks, but some were ignoring the Health Ministry's March 31 warning to postpone non-essential trips to the region.
