Medical experts from China's mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao have called for cross-Straits efforts to contain the disease. On Wednesday, they exchanged information and experiences to cope with the mysterious virus at a two-day-forum in Beijing.

Over 60 epidemiologists, virologists, and respiratory experts from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao have gathered to probe into the prevention and treatment of SARS. It's hoped further breakthroughs in understanding the virus can be made through timely information exchange across the Straits.

This expert from Taiwan told reporters that despite the Taiwan authority's reluctance to allow him to attend this forum, he made the trip in the belief that cross-Straits efforts is crucial to containing the unknown virus.

Yi Ming A. Chen, president of Society of Preventive Medicine in Taiwan, said: "The exchange of experience and communication are extremely important for both the mainland and Taiwan. Information transparency on the disease is crucial. Though formal communication of the two sides does not seem easy, we can make efforts to contain the disease through non-governmental ways."

Offering a model for cooperation, Hong Kong representatives noted that efficient sharing of information around the globe, especially in SARS-infected areas, is crucial to minimizing the spread of the disease.

Leung Ting Hung, assistant director for Department of Health of Hong Kong SAR, said: "This requires international cooperation. It is important to share our experience, but in addition, we have established with our mainland counterparts national network so we can communicate quickly over the phone and the internet and fax, so we can share information immediately. Also we summarize experience on web site so that everyone around the world can look at different countries' experience.

Hong Kong and Taiwan researchers say Chinese experts have all the expertise and resources to find the cause of SARS. They expressed confidence that joint efforts will bring the disease under control soon.

Medical experts from China's mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan believed the containment of SARS is still a challenge that the whole world has to face. They hope further cross-Straits cooperation can be achieved in finding out the pathogen of SARS, SARS prevention, and its clinical treatment.
