China's major insurance companies guaranteed recently that they would provide cover for SARS, even though the State Council has defined the disease as "large scale" and "infectious". They will offer compensation on hospitalization and death for their policyholders.
Insurance companies are generally not responsible for infectious diseases such as smallpox and AIDS. However, SARS is not excluded from their range of cover.
Recently, the Ping'an Insurance Company brought out a new policy specially tailored for medical workers who have the highest possibility of being infected by the disease.
Hong Juan, deputy manager of Ping'an Insurance Company, said, "Medical workers have the highest possibility of being infected. However, in order to ensure social stability, we will not levy extra premiums or lower the extent of cover."
So far, Ping'an Insurance has received 19 claims from SARS patients, 12 of which have already got compensation. The China Life Insurance Company has to date received one claim, which is currently being processed.
