Chinese medical workers routinely risk their own lives in the fight against SARS, putting other people's health ahead of any consideration for their personal safety.
Doctor Huang Zitong, deputy director of Zhongshan University No.2 Affiliated Hospital was among the first doctors in China to see a SARS patient. He has been devoted to treatment and SARS research since late last year, has frequent close contacts with patients, and seldom gives a thought to his own safety.
"Once I was giving emergency treatment to a driver who, I believed, needed a tracheotomy performed in order to regain breath. All my colleagues who were there were infected after his windpipe was exposed," said Dr. Huang Zitong.
Watching his colleague’s succumb to the disease did not frighten Dr. Huang away. Instead, he stayed in the hospital day and night, to find an effective treatment plan for them. In fact he became infected himself. But that didn’t stop him. By monitoring and analyzing his personal experience with SARS, he helped his colleagues to collect enough first-hand clinical information to work out a treatment package plan within a month. Two weeks later, Dr Huang was fully recovered with the help of the therapy.
"I stayed at home for two weeks, then I went to work again. Through effective treatment, many staff in our hospital had recovered and returned to their work, just like me," said Dr. Huang Zitong.
The fight against SARS is a bit like a race against time -- early diagnosis and effective treatment being essential to stop the further spread of the disease. But Guangdong doctors and medical workers have obviously united to meet the challenge, and they are prepared to make extraordinary efforts and sacrifice to beat it.
