SARS hits religious group in Canada
   CCTV.COM   2003-04-16 14:04:33
An international Catholic community in Canada's largest city of Toronto has been hit by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus, with all 500 members of the Bukas Loob sa Diyos Covenant now in quarantine, it is reported Tuesday.

Ten members of the group, whose name means Open In Spirit To God, are believed to have SARS and another 19 are suspected of having the virus. Three of the cases are children under the age of 10 and are receiving medical care at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.

Two physicians who treated members of the group have also been diagnosed with SARS, bringing to 31 the number of people identified with the cluster.

The cases are connected to a member of the group who died on April 1 and can be traced back to the original outbreak at Scarborough Grace Hospital in Toronto. Some members may have been infected at his funeral because it was not known he died from SARS at the time.

Before the announcement of this case, there were four other new probable cases reported Monday, and no more deaths. That brings the national total to 287 suspected or probable cases and 13 deaths, the lion's share of them being in Ontario.
