More foreign firms to attend Guangzhou trade fair

SARS does not seem to be affecting interest in China's traditional Export Commodities Fair. Held twice -- in spring and autumn every year in Guangzhou, this year's spring trade fair will be the largest ever.

When the Trade Fair opens tomorrow in Guangzhou, visitors will find more foreign participants in the exhibition hall. Among the more than 9,000 companies due to attend, overseas companies or joint venture firms account for 12 percent, a 55 percent increase in numbers over last year.

For the first time in the history of the trade fair, an international procurement zone in the hall will be designated to meet the requirements of multinational groups making purchases in China. On-line business will play an active role to improve transaction efficiency and ease people's fear over the SARS virus.

As the host of the fair, Guangdong province continues to be one of the main driving forces of China's booming foreign trade. According to the customs estimates, the total import and export volume for Guangdong province in the first quarter of this year amounts to nearly 60 billion US dollars, a strong increase of 33 percent year-on-year. The primary engine of this growth is a massive increase in electronic and high-tech products.
