At the ongoing National People's Congress session, deputies continued group discussions on Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's government work report. NPC deputies and the mayors of Shanghai and Beijing said the two cities will prepare thoroughly for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and seize the opportunity to promote the Chinese economy's further development.

Preparing well for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is one of the suggestions raised by Premier Zhu Rongji in his government work. During Friday's group discussions, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng outlined the major projects for the city in the coming eight years.

"By the year 2010 when the World Expo is held, Shanghai should show to the world its image as an international economic, financial and trade center," said Han Zheng.

As China's most vigorous city in terms of economy, Shanghai is expected to further expand with the success of its bid to host the World Expo in 2010. The metropolis is going to form a leading group for the World Expo and invite experts from home and abroad to do research and raise proposals for the event.

China's capital city, Beijing, also underlined its future prospects as it prepares to host the Olympic Games in 2008. Beijing Mayor Meng Xuenong said the city is willing to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Olympics to promote the country's continuing and rapid economic development.

"The Olympics are a good opportunity for our nation. We will seize this chance to promote our national economy to develop better and faster," said Meng Xuenong.

The mayor said Beijing is open to the outside world and encourages both domestic and international enterprises to take part in the Olympics marketing work. He added that the 2008 Olympics will increase the popularity of a number of local companies and their products across the world.
