Chinese President Jiang Zemin has called on APEC members to cut trade protectionism and open their markets wider to overseas businesses. He made the call while addressing business leaders on Saturday at the APEC CEO summit in Mexico.

Noting that the global economic recovery is not solidly based, President Jiang said that APEC members need to take more vigorous steps to reactivate the world economy. Urging APEC members to cut trade protectionism, the Chinese president said protectionism not only constrains overseas companies, but also hampers the growth of domestic businesses in the long run. Jiang Zemin told more than 1,000 business leaders that China's strong economic growth in recent years has contributed to global development.

He said China has kept its commitments to the WTO after joining the organization late last year, and has taken substantial steps in reducing its tariffs. The APEC CEO summit is one of a series of APEC events, and this year's meeting comes under the theme of "challenges for development in an era of uncertainty".
