Wu Yi calls for better public hygiene

    Vice-Premier and Health Minister Wu Yi has stressed the need to improve public hygiene in China. Wu Yi was speaking at a national conference on public health. She said the country needs to learn from the struggle against SARS.

    The vice-premier said the anti-SARS campaign had exposed numerous problems in the public health system. Amongst these is the sorry state of China's public toilets. Wu Yi also noted the lack of facilities for medical emergencies and the need to set up a response mechanism for crises in the health system.

    In addition, she said better supervision is needed to make sure laws on public health were implemented. Wu Yi also focused on sanitation problems in rural China. She said it is important that hygienic problems are addressed, if the living standards in rural China are to be improved. The health minister said China will not let down its guard in the battle to prevent a recurrence of SARS.
