China's western province of Shanxi is launching a tourist campaign that focuses on the theme of healthy travel. The idea is that visiting Shanxi will simply make you feel better. Given the province's wealth of attractions, promoters are confident the idea will catch on.
Shanxi is in the middle reach of the Yellow River. The province is dotted with ancient caves, Buddhist temples, art and sculpture. Some of the sites such as this wooden pagoda in the Ying County, the Hanging Temple on Mount Hengshan and the Yungang Grottoes are renowned throughout China, earning the province the title of China's ancient art museum. Now authorities want to spread that fame.
Ji Zhenfang, director of Shanxi Tourism Bureau, said, "The city of Pingyao and the Yungang Grottoes are both World Heritage sites. The Jinci Temple is a candidate for the list. We need to preserve and protect them."
Ro Annan is from France. It's not her first time in Shanxi, but she's very happy to be back.
"This is my second visit to Pingyao, I love the feeling of being in such an ancient city. China is showing its beauty to the whole world," said the French tourist.
Tourism officials have launched a campaign called "A healthy tour of Shanxi." It aims to integrate resources in the province to give visitors the best possible experience. And it seems to be working, with visitor numbers on the rise in the province. The program combines temples and architectural marvels with stops at ancient sites, including a visit to the origins of culture on the Yellow River.
The provincial government is investing a lot in making the program work. This is the new Beijing-Shanxi highway. It will go into operation in September, cutting travel time between Beijing and Datong to just three hours.
