Liu Qi, Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, has been interviewed on the WHO's decision to lift its travel warning for Beijing and its removal of Beijing from the list of SARS affected regions.

Liu Qi who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, says the victory against SARS has been a victory of the Chinese spirit.

When asked what the Chinese capital plans to do next, Liu said in the next half year, the Beijing municipal government will focus on social and economic development and step up the improvement of the public health system.

As to whether SARS will return this winter or next spring, Liu Qi, who heads the Beijing joint panel on SARS control, said, "We should remain vigilant against SARS, as the cause of the epidemic has still not been identified. However, we are highly confident in our ability to control and prevent SARS so long as we have an effective disease response mechanism and hospital administration. We can say confidently that will be safe to travel here in the autumn and winter."

The exciting news from the WHO has also been widely welcomed by people in Beijing. But Beijingers know that the battle is far from over.

Wang Huiqin, whose daughter worked at the front line in the battle against SARS, said, "I think this is a battle we will never forget. And I think my daughter has become more mature because of it. We should stay alert against the disease because the war is not over yet."

While China's capital welcomes the long-expected WHO decision, people here also know clearly that the fight against epidemics like SARS and improving the public health system is not yet over.
