The State SARS Prevention and Treatment Technology Research Group has made considerable progress after it was established earlier this year.
The research group was established on April 24 this year, and comprises personnel from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health, as well as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Military Academy of Medical Sciences and other organizations.
An official from the group tells CCTV that the outbreak of SARS has brought together thousands of researchers around China, and both the speed and scale of the efforts are unprecedented.
"Experts say 95 major research projects were established. Every one of these major projects has concentrated forces from various fields. It can be said that through state-appointed directives, we have formed a superb task force," said Jia Jingdun with State SARS Research Group.
The two tests that lead to the early detection and diagnosis of SARS is a good example. It's a joint effort by the Beijing Institute of Gene Grouping and the China Military Academy of Medical Sciences.
Resource-sharing and close cooperation have greatly improved efficiency. Dr. Tang Hong from the Chinese Academy of Sciences says some research projects that used to take months or even years are now completed within weeks.
Chinese scientists were the first to develop a recombinant human interferon a-2b spray and put it into clinical use ahead of the United States.
So far, the state SARS research group has allocated some 180 million yuan, or nearly 20 million US dollars for its 95 research projects. The fund will also be used to build a state bio-safety laboratory, as well as clinical research bases in the future.
