Airlines reach for skies again

As the SARS epidemic comes under control in China, the country's air carriers are getting back to business. And some international airlines are planning to resume their flights to China by July.

For a couple of years, US-based United Airlines has maintained 21 flights a week between America and China. The SARS epidemic badly hit its business throughout Asia and the company cut its trans-Pacific routes to China to 12 a week.

But, as the WHO continues to lift travel alerts in the region, the American carrier is getting back to normal. In July, it's resuming its usual five flights per week from Shanghai to Los Angeles and three flights per week from Hong Kong to Los Angeles. It will also be offering incentives to attract more travelers.

"I believe a lot of business people and other passengers will come back to China soon. I also think that when SARS is under control, more business activities will resume. We probably will soon resume our usual schedule of 21 flights per week to China," said Guo Zhenxiong, United Airlines' China chief.

Other international airlines are expressing similar sentiments. They include airlines from Germany, Finland, Singapore and the Netherlands.
