Australia assists China in public health improvement

The Australian government has donated 350,000 Australian dollars, or more than 230,000 US dollars to purchase medical equipment needed in China's western regions.

The Australian government's donation is primarily targeted at SARS prevention and treatment in China's poorer regions, where there is a lack of medical equipment and personnel. But in a broader sense, it also aims to help improve China's public health system. The donation will benefit the three provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, and Hunan.

"The resources we donate are going to be very useful in remote areas in the treatment of infectious disease, another thing which might come in the future...longer-term benefit than simply fighting the current crisis," said Alan William Thomas, Australian ambassador.

Some rural areas in China's western provinces currently lack adequate medical equipment, facilities and services, making the poor more vulnerable to a health crisis such as SARS. Both domestic and international supports are needed to provide them with the necessary medical facilities and expertise.

The fund has been entrusted to the United Nations Development Program. With this financial aid, projects will be launched within the three provinces to improve their healthcare system.
