Wen Jiabao outlines measures for public health

    Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met public health experts on Tuesday to discuss measures to improve the country's SARS-hit health system. The premier stressed that as China strives for economic development, equal importance must be given to public health, harmony with the environment, and sustainable development.

    First Premier Wen Jiabao listening to the opinions of the health experts. Then he said the current battle against SARS has seen victory in getting the disease under control. He pointed out the battle is a reminder of the importance of public health system. He outlined strong measures necessary to improve the system.

    1. To establish a public health emergency response mechanism;

    2. To further develop rules and regulations on public health emergencies;

    3. To deepen the reform of China's health care system, especially in rural areas;

    4. To strengthen research work on disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention;

    5. To highlight public health education, eliminate unsanitary habits, and foster a national spirit for sports.

    Wen Jiabao said it's crucial for a nation to learn from experience, particularly the battle against SARS. He asked governments at all levels to increase efforts on public health development, improve their capability to deal with emergencies, and keep a balanced development between the economy and society.
