HK could soon be off WHO's SARS-affected list

    The Hong Kong Health Department has predicted that the Special Administration Region could be taken off the World Health Organization's list of SARS affected areas as soon as next Monday. Monday was the fifth consecutive day that no new SARS cases were reported in Hong Kong.

    Dr. David Heymann, the WHO's executive director for communicable diseases, praised Hong Kong at the end of a brief trip to the region on Monday for its high degree of transparency in handling the SARS outbreak. He said Hong Kong could be soon be off the WHO's list of SARS-affected areas.

    Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, director general of the WHO, will visit Hong Kong before the weekend, and work out the final date for Hong Kong's removal from the list.
