China vows to prevent resurgence of SARS

China's health authorities have vowed to prevent a resurgence of SARS by maintaining the current control measures after four regions were taken off the WHO's travel advisory list. Meanwhile, the tourism industry has made moves to promote the sector, which has been hit hardest by SARS.

The Ministry of Health called the lifting of the travel advisory as reward for the country's efforts. A ministry official said China would work hard to expand on the achievement.

"We should learn from the past and continue with the effective measures. We will continue improving the operation of the fever clinics and prevent infections in hospitals. We will stick to the principle of early discovery, early reporting and early quarantine," said Mao Qunan, vice director of Health Ministry General Office.

China's tourism authority also welcomed the lifting of travel advisory against Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and Tianjin.

"This suggests that the WHO recognizes China's achievements in the fight against SARS. It is also encouraging for China's travel industry," said Sun Gang, deputy director of National Tourism Administration.

Tourism officials say travel restrictions on most cities have been lifted, and some local tourism projects have been organized to revitalize the industry. But the main priority for travel agencies and hotels is to minimize the risk of SARS infection.
