On Saturday morning, Chinese high school graduates begin sitting for two days of national university entrance exams. By Friday, careful preparations had been completed to ensure smooth and healthy exams.
To get familiar with an exam environment, many students today came to the exam sites where staff are making the final preparations. In some major cities like Beijing and Tianjin, exam participants are allowed into the classrooms to adjust the seats and tables.
To guarantee the health and safety of students and teachers, exam sites have provided enough disinfectant and sterilizing equipment. So far, staff at the exam sites have taken preventive measures to ensure the college entrance exams proceed as scheduled.
In Beijing, a specific document has been issued to deal with emergency situations during the exams. If a student is found to be showing symptoms such as a high fever, coughing or difficulty in breathing, he will be immediately examined by the medical workers at the exam sites. If the exact cause of the symptoms cannot be confirmed on the spot, the other students in the room will be transferred to a spare exam-room.
In some cities, students have been required to check their temperatures since May 24 and record the results on their health cards. Suspected or probable SARS patients will not be allowed to take part in the nationwide exams.
"We should do all the preparatory work well to satisfy all the exam participants, and their families," said Zhou Ji, education minister.
To ensure the fairness of the exams, great efforts have also been taken to intensify the inspection of the exam sites. Officials from the Education Ministry have been dispatched all over the country to check on the preparatory work.
