Hong Kong welcomes first post-SARS Guangdong tourists
   CCTV.COM   2003-06-02 09:06:09
On Sunday, Hong Kong received the first 32 groups of 1,000 tourists from neighboring Guangdong Province, the first to arrive since the WHO lifted its travel advisory against Hong Kong on May 23. But health security measures remain tight, and the tourists' temperatures were checked both at the departure and arrival stages.

A series of hygiene measures are in place to ensure the safety of this travel. After the WHO issued the travel advisory on April 2, travel agencies in the Chinese mainland and overseas suspended tour services to Hong Kong, thwarting the travel plans of more than 10,000 people who had registered to go to Hong Kong. Now, these people are waiting to make new arrangements for their visit.

"I have registered to visit Hong Kong in March. Because of SARS, I was a little bit scared. But now, I feel much better," said a Guangdong tourist.

To ensure the health of visitors, tourist buses are all equipped with thermometers and masks for passengers. The buses are thoroughly cleaned everyday and fresh air supply systems on the buses are checked regularly.

The Hong Kong tourism industry estimates that about 100,000 Guangdong people will visit Hong Kong this month and that the badly-affected Hong Kong tourism industry will be completely back to normal by October.
