Chinese President meets Polish, Greek, Canadian leaders

    On the sidelines of the celebration marking St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary, Chinese President Hu Jintao has met leaders from Poland, Greece and Canada.

    During the meeting with Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, Hu Jintao said that maintaining and developing Sino-Polish relations was the common desire of both peoples and was in the interests of both countries. He says the new Chinese central leadership will be as devoted as ever to strengthening bilateral ties of friendly cooperation. The Polish president said that his country hoped to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields as well.

    While meeting with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, President Hu reaffirmed China's intention to further promote relations with the EU.

    He also expressed his hope that Athens and Beijing would explore new ways of cooperation as both sides make preparations to host their respective upcoming Olympic Games, first in Athens in 2004, and then in Beijing in 2008.

    The Greek prime minister said the EU was willing to join efforts with China to further expand their cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.

    On the same day, President Hu also expressed his desire to further develop friendly relations with Canada while meeting the country's Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

    The two leaders also exchanged views on their country's fight against SARS. The Canadian leader spoke highly of China's progress in controlling the spread of the disease and agreed to strengthen medical and scientific cooperation between the two nations.
