Chinese Vice Premier and Health Minister Wu Yi says the SARS outbreak will not shake China's confidence and its economic progress. Wu Yi made the remarks while meeting with Vice President of Caterpillar Investment Corporation Stuart Levernick. Wu Yi also assured overseas investors that the Chinese government has the capacity to control SARS and protect their interests.

Vice Premier Wu Yi says the Chinese government will eventually bring SARS under control, safeguarding overseas investors' health and maintaining the country's economic growth. She added that the outbreak had prompted China to improve the transparency and efficiency of its administration.

Mr Levernick briefed the vice premier on his company's operations in China. He said Caterpillar regarded China as its home and had confidence in the Chinese economy and the company's future business here.

Caterpillar is one of the world's largest heavy equipment and engine manufacturers. It has participated in the construction of almost all of China's major projects since 1985, including the Three Gorges Project, the Qinghai-Tibet railroad and the natural gas pipeline from western China to the east.
