Despite new cases of SARS diminishing in the past week, the Beijing municipal government cautioned that high vigilance should be maintained as the city is becoming busier daily. The message was delivered at the weekly SARS press conference given by the Beijing municipal government.
Cai Fuchao, deputy director of the Prevention and Control Panel of Beijing SARS Joint Work Group, said at the press conference that last week, Beijing has seen a notable downward trend of SARS spread. SARS incidents dwindled and the recovery rate increased. But he warned that a new situation is confronting the fight against the disease.
He said,"We are soberly aware that a new changing situation is facing us. I think many of you have noticed that the city of Beijing used to be tranquil, but now it is becoming bustling as there are more cars, more people on the streets, in the shopping malls and restaurants, more migrant workers are coming back and schools are resuming classes. The new situation presents a serious challenge and we cannot relax any of our measures."
Cai Fuchao cautioned Beijing citizens to keep high awareness of self-protection. And he said that the next stage, SARS prevention among migrant workers will be a top priority.
He also said, "In the last week, there are 15 confirmed cases and 33 suspected cases in migrant workers. Categorized by occupation, the SARS occurrence in migrant workers has risen to the top of the list."
Cai Fuchao also dismissed the possibility of under-reporting. He said any cover-up of the numbers will be severely punished.
